          • BOOK BUDDY

          • Oxford International School is full of readers of all ages! From Reception to Year 11, all Cambridge Curriculum students enjoyed having a Book Buddy with whom they shared the wonderful experience of reading. Students relished in the act of reading to one another, making friends and bonding over the magic of the printed word. Learning, laughing, talking and giggling over the valuable event helped create a love of reading for all. As Dr Seuss once wrote, ‘The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go’ and we cannot argue with that. OIS students, with their love of reading, will go many places!

After reading to Primary students, our reflective Secondary students of Years 9, 10 and 11 had the following to say:

‘Today was an amazing day because I met a new friend, a Year 3 boy. I enjoyed this reading time together.’ –Zarif, Year 9

‘We, as a class, went to Year 3 to read them books because books are very important to expand our vocabulary and to improve our imaginations. It was a fun time. The girl and I read Alice in Wonderland. We discussed the story and she learned some new words. There were some funny moments. She and I both enjoyed it. I think we did a really good thing by going and reading books to kids that are younger than us. It was a fun time!’ –Osman, Year 9

‘I really enjoyed reading to the girl from Year 3. I also enjoyed listening to her read me some of her favourite books. I also really liked the way she was reading to me with emotions and excitement. I am really glad that I got to experience reading to small kids and I’m glad they enjoyed it, too.’ –Kamilya, Year 9

‘If you find a way to each [student], they will open themselves and enjoy their time with you. Some read at a higher level and some of them at a lower level, but it doesn’t stop them from reading—they understand that reading is the key to the world.’ –Altynai, Year 10

‘It was enjoyable and very interesting. I hope we can read together again.’ –Chagry, Year 10

‘For me, reading with an eight-year-old is something I rarely do and it felt good for me to experience it.’ –Niyaz, Year 10

‘Year 5 students read very well and fast. The pronunciation of some students was at a very high level. They were so funny and kind. The atmosphere reminded me of my childhood when I was reading to older people. They reminded me of some nice memories.’ –Dastan I., Year 11

‘Every year at OIS we are organizing Book Week. It always makes me happy when I help the younger generation learn new things. That moment when you see their faces, fully comprehending the analysis in their minds…. I enjoyed it a lot and I hope the younger children did, too.’ –Ainazik, Year 11

‘It was a pleasant experience!’ –Madina, Year 11
